Cocoa land near Oluwa Forest Reserve, Ondo

Nine farms near the Oluwa Forest Reserve in Ondo State. One is Clear, six need a person to look, and two are Stop because the maps show that forest there lost its trees in 2022. The shipment of everything is blocked. The shipment of the Clear lot alone is a draft.

  • 9 farms, 48.7 hectares
  • 1 Clear, 6 Check, 2 Stop
  • 1 of 9 farms in the farm location file of the proof pack that can go forward
  • Shipment S-001: Blocked: not for your EU buyer. Take lot L-002 out of this shipment, or resolve its farms first.
  • Shipment S-002: Draft pack. Land papers are missing for 1 plot: OND-OLW-0002.
  • Farm edges traced from satellite photos. No farmer was contacted.
  • Weights are estimates. No bags were bought.
  • No person has reviewed the Check farms.
  • Nobody has approved any shipment for an EU buyer.

The story

How this case was run.

Nine farms, 48.7 hectares, on land near the Oluwa Forest Reserve in Ondo State.

Public data has no cocoa farm edges for Nigeria. So Forestline traced each farm edge from satellite photos. It followed tracks, clearing edges and the line where trees meet open land. Eight edges were drawn first. The ninth was added later. It was picked from the EU 2020 forest map alone, to cover a farm that the map calls forest. No edge was moved after a result came back.

Then every farm went through the same Cut-off Check as a farm sent in by a customer. The check used real satellite records and real Forestline AI readings.

One farm is Clear (OND-OLW-0002). Six are Check: a person must look at them. Two are Stop. On those two, 4.1 and 5.9 hectares of land that the EU 2020 map calls forest lost its trees in 2022, in the University of Maryland loss record. The recent alerts also fire on both farms.

The photos and the records do not always say the same. Forestline AI is told to say "not sure" rather than guess, and it never clears or stops a farm alone. A farm is never Clear when Forestline AI says it is not sure what the photos show: a person must look. On the two Stop farms it did not confirm a forest cut. On OND-OLW-0007 it read shaded cocoa in the 2020 photo, which the EU map often calls forest, and a grid of tracks through the remaining green today. It marked its answer "not sure", with medium confidence. The 2026 photo of OND-OLW-0008 is too blurred to read. The records decide those two, and a person must look at both.

The one Clear farm, OND-OLW-0002, has no forest on the EU 2020 map and no tree loss in the records. Forestline AI saw no felling in the photos, with medium confidence.

OND-OLW-0001 shows why Forestline AI's reading counts. The records show no tree loss after 2020 there, and the EU 2020 map does not call it forest. But Forestline AI was not sure what the photos show, with medium confidence. It read shaded cocoa in 2020, and thinner cover with tracks and lighter ground today. It did not read a forest cut, but it could not tell what the change is. So the farm is a Check, not Clear. Both photos sit side by side on the farm page, and a person must look at them before any shipment.

No farmer was contacted and no bags were bought. Every weight is the farm's size times 400 kg of dry cocoa a hectare, the published average for a season. It is an estimate. It shows how lots and the proof pack work. It is not a sale.

No person has reviewed the Check farms. So they are left out of the farm location file, and their bags are not kept apart.

Shipment S-001 holds lots L-001 and L-002 (19,474 kg, estimated). It is blocked: not for an EU buyer. Lot L-002 (16,612 kg) is not kept apart: 8 bag groups trace to a plot that is not cleared. Mixed goods cannot be fixed by leaving plots out of the farm location file. Take lot L-002 out of this shipment, or resolve its farms first. Shipment S-002 holds lot L-001 (2,862 kg, estimated). It is a draft pack. The goods, the weights and the farm location file tie together. But land papers are missing for 1 plot: OND-OLW-0002. No farmer or owner was contacted, so there are no papers. No one has approved any shipment for an EU buyer.

Forestline AI's reading

The 2020 photo shows a dappled green canopy with scattered tall trees, typical of cocoa under shade. The current photo shows much less canopy, with visible tracks and bare or light-coloured ground between remaining vegetation. The shade cover appears to have thinned significantly. The facts record no tree loss after the cut-off date.

Proof to gather: Year the farmer first planted cocoa on this plot; Old photos or cooperative records showing the farm before 2020; Reason for shade-tree removal or thinning, with dates; Receipts for any recent seedling purchases; GPS-tagged ground photos of current cocoa trees and canopy.

The 2020 photo shows an uneven, dappled green canopy inside the farm edge, typical of cocoa under shade trees. The latest selected photo has a bright haze or cloud patch across the upper part of the plot, but where visible the canopy still looks green and intact. The EU 2020 forest map marks 93.6% of the plot as forest, but this is likely shade cocoa. The facts record 0.199 ha of tree loss since 2020, but no bare ground or clearing is visible in either photo.

Proof to gather: Year the farmer first planted cocoa on this plot; Old photos or cooperative records showing cocoa trees before 2020; Count of cocoa tree ages to confirm planting period; Field visit to check whether the 0.199 ha loss is replanting or natural tree fall.

  • 4.1 hectares of this plot was forest at the end of 2020 and has lost its trees in 2022. That is 68% of the plot. Do not buy from it for the EU.
  • 1.9 hectares lost trees after 2020 on land the EU 2020 map does not call forest. Often this is old rubber or cocoa cut and planted again. Ask for the planting year and proof. Forestline AI: In 2020 the plot was covered by a green canopy that looks like cocoa or other trees under shade. Today the plot shows a grid of brown roads or tracks cutting through remaining green strips, matching large-scale clearing. The facts record 5.984 ha of tree loss in 2022, covering nearly the entire plot.
  • Satellite alerts show about 0.5 hectares of new tree loss in this plot since 2021. The latest alert is from 2022. A person must look at the latest selected photo.

  • The EU 2020 map calls 94% of this plot forest, but Forestline AI sees cocoa under shade trees. The EU map often calls shaded cocoa forest. No tree loss was found after 2020. Gather: The year the farmer first planted cocoa on this plot; Old photos or cooperative records showing the farm existed before 2021; A field visit to count shade trees and confirm cocoa under the canopy; Seedling or input receipts if replanting ever took place.

Forestline AI's reading

Both photos show a green, uneven canopy inside the farm edge. There is no sign of clearing, bare ground or new planting. The canopy looks the same in 2020 and today.

Proof pack

The files an EU buyer would receive.

Built from this run. Farms that are Stop, unchecked or not reviewed are left out of the farm location file and listed. Bag weights are each farm's estimated season capacity (area times a published average yield), because no bags were bought from these farms.

Shipment S-001: Blocked

Something stops the handoff. Fix the blockers below.

  • Lot L-002 (16,612 kg) is not kept apart: 8 bag groups trace to a plot that is not cleared. Mixed goods cannot be fixed by leaving plots out of the farm location file. Take lot L-002 out of this shipment, or resolve its farms first.
  • 8 plots behind these goods are not in the farm location file: OND-OLW-0001 (Check, no one has accepted it), OND-OLW-0003 (Check, no one has accepted it), OND-OLW-0004 (Check, no one has accepted it), OND-OLW-0005 (Check, no one has accepted it) and 4 more. The goods and the producer locations do not match. Resolve these plots, or take the lots that hold their bags out of the shipment.

Nobody approved this case's shipment. It is a real run on public map data, so there is no approval to show.

  1. 1. Satellite check: Clear, Check or Stop for each farm.
  2. 2. A person's review: Every Check, and every farm where the maps and Forestline AI disagree.
  3. 3. Traceability: Every bag traces to a cleared farm.
  4. 4. Shipment approval: Until someone approves the handoff, the pack is a draft.
